Car Lift vs Taxi vs Your Own Car in Dubai
What a daily cross-city commute actually costs, worked out with October 2026 fuel, toll and taxi rates.
Four ways to get to work, one month of costs
Worked out for a typical route we run — International City to Dubai Media City, about 40 km each way, 22 working days a month.
| Option | Per month | Each way | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riaz Car Lift | AED 500 | 60–80 min | Seat, driver, fuel, Salik, parking — everything |
| Your own car | AED 1,800–3,000 | 55–75 min | Fuel, Salik and parking, before insurance and servicing |
| Taxi or ride-hailing | AED 4,200–4,800 | 55–75 min | Everything, but paid twice a day at full fare |
| Metro and feeder bus | about AED 350 | 100–140 min | Cheapest, but no station near these areas |
Prices checked 26 October 2026: UAE Special 95 petrol AED 4.28 a litre, Salik AED 6.30 a crossing at peak and AED 4.20 off peak, Dubai taxi flag fall AED 5 plus about AED 2.45 a kilometre. Fuel and toll rates in the UAE are reviewed regularly, so treat these as a guide, not a quotation.
Where the numbers come from
Taking a taxi
A 40 km trip across Dubai runs about AED 95–110 once you add the AED 5 flag fall, roughly AED 2.45 a kilometre and a Salik crossing. That is one direction.
Two of those a day, 22 days a month, is AED 4,200–4,800. Nothing is included that you are not already paying for — you simply pay the full fare, twice, every day.
Driving yourself
80 km a day for 22 days is about 1,760 km a month. At 9 litres per 100 km and AED 4.28 a litre that is roughly AED 680 of fuel.
Add Salik at AED 6.30 a crossing in peak hours — AED 280–560 depending on how many gates your route passes — and office parking, which runs from about AED 300 to AED 600 a month if a pass is available at all.
That is AED 1,250–1,800 before a single bill for insurance, registration, servicing, tyres or the value the car loses sitting in traffic.
The car lift
AED 400 your first month, then AED 500. One payment, both directions, every working day.
Fuel, Salik, parking, servicing and the driver are all inside that number. There is nothing to pay on the road and nothing to budget for separately.
The metro
An all-zones monthly pass is around AED 350, which is genuinely cheaper. We are not going to pretend otherwise.
The catch is that none of our pick up areas has a metro station. From International City, Silicon Oasis or Academic City you are looking at a feeder bus, at least one change, and close to two hours each way. Four hours of your day, every day.
When a car lift is not the right answer
We would rather you chose correctly than signed up and regretted it:
- Your hours move around. A car lift runs to a fixed timing. If you finish at 5 one day and 9 the next, you will miss the vehicle.
- You live or work near a metro station. If both ends of your trip are a short walk from the red line, the metro is cheaper and often quicker.
- You need the car during the day. Site visits, client meetings, school runs — a car lift cannot help with those.
- Your company already runs a bus. Check before you pay for anything.
If none of those apply and you are driving across the city twice a day, the maths above is hard to argue with.

Cost questions
Is a car lift cheaper than a taxi in Dubai?
Yes, by a wide margin on these routes. Two taxi trips a day across the city for a working month comes to roughly AED 4,200–4,800. The same month on a car lift is AED 500, and that includes fuel, Salik and parking.
Is a car lift cheaper than driving my own car?
On running costs alone — fuel, tolls and parking — a cross-city commute costs about AED 1,250–1,800 a month. Insurance, registration, servicing, tyres and the value the car loses each year sit on top of that. A car lift replaces all of it with one payment.
Would the metro be cheaper?
In pure fare terms, yes. But there is no metro station at International City, Dubai Silicon Oasis or Academic City, so you would take a feeder bus, change at least once, and spend close to two hours each way. For most people that is the deciding factor.
Do these figures include Salik and parking?
The car lift figure does — AED 500 a month is the whole cost. The own-car figures include fuel, Salik and parking but exclude insurance, registration and servicing, so the real gap is wider than the table shows.
